NonEucharistic

NonEucharistic is an adjective used in liturgical studies to describe rites, services, or devotions that do not involve the celebration or reception of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). It is not a formal liturgical category across all denominations, but a descriptive label used by scholars and practitioners to distinguish between Eucharistic and non-Eucharistic forms of worship.

In Catholic and many Protestant contexts, non-Eucharistic services emphasize Scripture, prayer, psalmody, singing, preaching, and intercession rather than the sacramental action. They are commonly found as weekday services, services of the Word, or community gatherings when a Eucharistic celebration is impractical or unavailable. Some Anglican and Protestant traditions schedule non-Eucharistic services, such as services of the Word or prayer meetings, separate from the weekly Communion.

Contemporary discussions about non-Eucharistic worship address questions of ecclesial identity, sacramental life, and pastoral need. Proponents argue that non-Eucharistic gatherings sustain communal worship and outreach; critics may worry that excluding the Eucharist diminishes the church's central rite.

The term remains primarily a descriptive label in liturgical scholarship rather than a formal designation in official rites. Usage varies by author and tradition, and some sources prefer terms such as "Liturgy of the Word" or "service of prayer" to describe similar non-Eucharistic forms.
