The Nomai were an ancient, interstellar civilization that explored and settled the solar system in the game Outer Wilds. Their history is primarily revealed through the player's discovery of their scattered writings and ruins across various planets. The Nomai were highly advanced in science and technology, particularly in the fields of physics, astronomy, and engineering. They were driven by a deep curiosity and a quest for knowledge, especially regarding the nature of the universe and the origins of a mysterious signal they detected.

Their journey to the solar system was initiated by a catastrophic event on their home planet, forcing them to seek a new home. Upon arrival, they encountered a unique planetary system with unusual gravitational anomalies and a sun that was about to explode. Much of their technological development in this solar system was focused on understanding and potentially harnessing these phenomena, particularly the sun's imminent supernova and the mysterious "Eye of the Universe" they believed was the source of the signal. Their efforts led to the creation of advanced devices like the warp core, teleportation technology, and the Ash Twin Project. Despite their advanced civilization, the Nomai ultimately faced an extinction event within the solar system, the exact nature of which is a central mystery the player unravels.
