Nofrostjärjestelmät, often translated as no-frost systems, are a type of refrigeration technology designed to prevent the buildup of ice inside refrigerators and freezers. This is achieved through a combination of features that manage humidity and airflow within the appliance.

The core principle of a no-frost system involves circulating cold, dry air throughout the interior. This is typically accomplished using a fan that blows air over a cold evaporator coil. As the air circulates, moisture in the air condenses on the evaporator coil and then freezes, forming ice. However, the system is designed to periodically defrost this coil. During the defrost cycle, a heating element warms the coil, melting the accumulated ice. The resulting water is then channeled away, usually to an evaporation pan located at the bottom of the appliance, where it evaporates.

The continuous circulation of air and the automated defrosting process prevent ice from forming on the interior walls and shelves, which is a common problem with older, frost-prone refrigerator models. This eliminates the need for manual defrosting, saving the user time and effort. Additionally, no-frost systems can contribute to more consistent internal temperatures, which is beneficial for food preservation. They also tend to be more energy-efficient over time compared to frost-covered units, as ice buildup can act as an insulator, reducing cooling efficiency. While the initial cost of a no-frost appliance might be higher, the convenience and potential energy savings are often considered worthwhile.
