Noemer

Noemer is a Dutch noun that designates the denominator of a fraction. In Dutch mathematical terminology, the part of a fraction below the horizontal bar is called the noemer, while the part above the bar is called the teller (the numerator).

In practice, the noemer represents the number of equal parts into which a whole is divided. When adding or subtracting fractions, the fractions must be rewritten to share a common noemer; the resulting fraction has the same value but a common noemer. In multiplication of fractions, the noemer multiplies with the other fraction’s noemer, and the numerators multiply with the other numerators. For division by a fraction, one multiplies by its reciprocal, which swaps the noemer and teller of the divisor.

The term is routinely used in arithmetic education and in formal discussions of fractions, ratios, and proportions. It is also encountered in exercises and explanations about simplifying fractions, finding common denominators, and comparing fractions with different denominators.

Example: in the fraction 7/12, the teller is 7 and the noemer is 12.
