Nitruuraatioksi, also known as nitrification, is a biological process that converts ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+) into nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) using two distinct types of bacteria. This process is crucial in the nitrogen cycle, which is essential for the growth of plants and the overall health of ecosystems.

The first step of nitrification is catalyzed by a group of bacteria called Nitrosomonas, which convert ammonia and ammonium into nitrite. This reaction is facilitated by the enzyme ammonia monooxygenase, which requires molecular oxygen (O2) as a substrate.

The second step of nitrification is carried out by another group of bacteria called Nitrobacter, which convert nitrite into nitrate. This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme nitrite oxidase, which also requires molecular oxygen.

Nitrification occurs in various environments, including soil, water, and wastewater treatment systems. It plays a significant role in the nitrogen cycle by providing a source of nitrate, which can be used by plants for growth and development. However, excessive nitrification can lead to environmental problems, such as eutrophication and water pollution.
