Nitrogénforrásként refers to the role of a substance or process in providing nitrogen, an essential element for life. Nitrogen is a fundamental component of amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), and various other organic molecules. Organisms cannot directly utilize the abundant atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and must obtain it in a usable form.

Various sources provide this necessary nitrogen. In biological systems, organic nitrogen compounds such as proteins, amino acids, and urea are common sources for heterotrophic organisms. These compounds are broken down, and the nitrogen is assimilated into new biological molecules. For plants and other autotrophs, inorganic nitrogen forms like ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) are crucial. These are typically absorbed from the soil.

The nitrogen cycle plays a vital role in making nitrogen available as a source. Processes like nitrogen fixation, carried out by certain bacteria, convert atmospheric N2 into ammonia, which can then be further processed into other usable forms. Denitrification, another microbial process, returns nitrogen to the atmosphere, completing the cycle. In industrial contexts, nitrogen is sourced for fertilizers, explosives, and industrial gases.
