Nitrilkautschuks

Nitrilkautschuk, also known as NBR or Buna-N, is a synthetic rubber copolymer derived from acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene. The properties of NBR vary depending on the acrylonitrile content, with higher ACN levels generally resulting in improved resistance to oils, fuels, and most hydrocarbons, but reduced flexibility at low temperatures. This makes it a versatile material for a wide range of industrial applications.

NBR exhibits good resistance to abrasion, tear, and compression set. It is also resistant to heat, water, and many acids and bases. However, it is susceptible to degradation by ozone, UV radiation, and strong oxidizing agents. Its performance can be further enhanced through compounding with various additives, such as carbon black for reinforcement, plasticizers for flexibility, and antioxidants for improved aging resistance.

The primary applications for NBR include automotive parts like fuel hoses, seals, and gaskets, as well as industrial seals, O-rings, conveyor belts, and protective gloves. Its excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels makes it indispensable in lubrication and fuel systems. Different grades of NBR are available, tailored to specific performance requirements, including varying molecular weights and acrylonitrile content. Processing methods for NBR include compression molding, injection molding, and extrusion.
