Nimellismäärä

Nimellismäärä refers to the stated or face value of a financial instrument, such as a bond or stock. It is the amount that will be repaid at maturity for a bond, or the initial value assigned to a share of stock. This value is typically printed on the certificate or in the bond's indenture.

For bonds, the nominal amount, often called the par value or face value, is the principal sum that the issuer agrees to repay the bondholder on the maturity date. Interest payments on bonds are usually calculated as a percentage of this nominal amount, known as the coupon rate. For example, a bond with a nominal amount of $1,000 and a coupon rate of 5% will pay $50 in interest annually.

In the context of stocks, the nominal value or par value is the arbitrary value assigned to a share when a company is incorporated. This amount is often very low, such as $0.01 or $1.00 per share, and has little relation to the stock's actual market value. The nominal value of a stock is primarily an accounting concept and does not represent its real worth or the amount an investor would receive if the company were liquidated. It is important to distinguish nominal amount from market price, which is determined by supply and demand in the financial markets.
