Nikkelkadmiumakut, often abbreviated as NiCd batteries, are a type of rechargeable battery that utilize nickel oxide-hydroxide and cadmium as electrodes. They were among the first widely adopted rechargeable battery technologies and found extensive use in portable electronics, power tools, and emergency lighting for many years. NiCd batteries offer a good balance of energy density and power output, making them suitable for applications requiring high discharge rates.

A key characteristic of NiCd batteries is their ability to withstand a large number of charge and discharge cycles, contributing to their long lifespan. However, they are known to suffer from the "memory effect," a phenomenon where the battery appears to lose capacity if repeatedly recharged after only a partial discharge. This effect can be mitigated by fully discharging the battery periodically. Another disadvantage of NiCd batteries is the environmental impact of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal. Due to environmental concerns and the development of superior battery technologies, NiCd batteries have largely been replaced by Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in many consumer applications. Despite this, they may still be found in some industrial or specialized equipment where their specific performance characteristics are advantageous. Proper disposal and recycling of NiCd batteries are crucial to minimize environmental contamination.
