Nikkeliteräksillä

Nikkeliteräkset, also known as nickel steels, are a group of steel alloys that contain nickel as a primary alloying element. The addition of nickel to steel significantly alters its properties, generally leading to improved toughness, ductility, and hardenability. The specific properties and applications of nikkeliteräkset depend on the percentage of nickel present, as well as other alloying elements such as carbon, chromium, and molybdenum.

Low-alloy nikkeliteräkset, typically containing up to 5% nickel, are often used for structural components where increased strength and toughness are desired. These steels can be heat-treated to achieve a wide range of mechanical properties. Medium-alloy nikkeliteräkset, with nickel content between 5% and 15%, exhibit even greater hardenability and are employed in demanding applications such as gears, shafts, and armor plating.

High-alloy nikkeliteräkset, often referred to as stainless steels or special steels, can contain more than 15% nickel. These steels, like austenitic stainless steels (e.g., 304 stainless steel), are known for their excellent corrosion resistance and are widely used in the chemical industry, food processing, and architectural applications. The presence of nickel in austenitic stainless steels prevents them from transforming into martensite upon cooling, resulting in a non-magnetic and highly ductile material.
