Nichtausgleich

Nichtausgleich is a German term that refers to the principle of non-uniform interchange, particularly in rail transport. In a normal situation, the track geometry is designed to allow trains to travel from one track gauge to another without any problems. This is achieved by using a set of adaptable track systems, or by simply changing the wheel of the train to match the local track gauge.

However, there are situations where a straightforward switch to a different track gauge is not feasible or practical. This is where the concept of Nichtausgleich comes into play. Nichtausgleich, which translates to "non-interchange" in English, refers to a specific type of track gauge in German-speaking countries, primarily used by locomotives or trains. Unlike trains that can be converted from one track gauge to another, locomotives using Nichtausgleich are designed to run on only one of the two most widely used track gauges.

Nichtausgleich allows for the deployment of locomotives on specific segments of track, often on spur lines or industrial networks, where normal train traffic doesn't occur. This decision simplifies the infrastructure management by not requiring to provide a full range of track adaptation that would be required for complying standard track gauge trains. As a result, Nichtausgleich typically means a reduction in infrastructure complexity and cost and reduced complexity for the driver.
