Ngapuhi

Ngāpuhi is a Māori iwi (tribe) of Aotearoa New Zealand, based primarily in the Northland region (Te Tai Tokerau). It is the largest iwi by population in the country. The Ngāpuhi rohe covers much of Northland, including the Hokianga and Bay of Islands areas and extending to Whangārei.

The social structure consists of numerous hapū (sub-tribes) and whānau, with marae serving as cultural and social centers. The iwi preserves te reo Māori and traditional customs, and participates in cultural and political life across the country.

Historically, Ngāpuhi maintained extensive networks for trade and alliances with other iwi and with Pākehā settlers in the early years of European contact. A number of Ngāpuhi chiefs were signatories to the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, and the iwi played a prominent role in colonial and post-colonial history, including periods of conflict such as the Flagstaff War sparked by Hone Heke.

In modern times, Ngāpuhi remains a major contributor to Māori and national politics, culture, and education. The iwi is involved in treaty claims and settlements through mechanisms established by the Crown and the Waitangi Tribunal, representing a broad mandate across its many hapū. Ongoing language and cultural revival efforts are supported by iwi organizations, educational initiatives, and community programs.
