Neutronimäärän

Neutronimäärän refers to the number of neutrons within the nucleus of an atom. This quantity is fundamental to defining an isotope of a chemical element. While the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, known as the atomic number (Z), determines the element itself, the number of neutrons (N) can vary. Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.

The total number of nucleons, which includes both protons and neutrons, in an atom's nucleus is called the mass number (A). The mass number is the sum of the atomic number and the neutron number, expressed as A = Z + N. Therefore, knowing any two of these values allows for the determination of the third. For instance, Carbon-12, a common isotope of carbon, has 6 protons (Z=6) and therefore a mass number of 12 (A=12). By using the relationship A = Z + N, we can calculate that Carbon-12 has 6 neutrons (N = 12 - 6 = 6). In contrast, Carbon-14, another isotope of carbon, also has 6 protons but has 8 neutrons (N = 14 - 6 = 8), resulting in a mass number of 14.

The neutronimäärän significantly influences an isotope's nuclear properties, such as its stability and radioactivity. Isotopes with specific neutron numbers might be stable, while others may be unstable and undergo radioactive decay. This variation in neutron number is crucial in fields like nuclear physics, chemistry, and applications such as carbon dating and nuclear medicine.
