Neutrofiilipitoisuuksissa refers to the concentration of neutrophils in a biological sample, most commonly blood. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell, specifically a granulocyte, and are a crucial part of the innate immune system. They are the most abundant type of white blood cell in mammals and play a primary role in fighting bacterial and fungal infections.

Elevated neutrophil counts, known as neutrophilia, can indicate a variety of conditions. The most common cause is infection, particularly bacterial infections. Inflammation, such as that seen in autoimmune diseases, tissue injury, or certain cancers, can also lead to increased neutrophil levels. Stress, strenuous exercise, and certain medications can also temporarily raise neutrophil counts.

Conversely, a low neutrophil count, termed neutropenia, makes an individual more susceptible to infections. Neutropenia can be caused by bone marrow disorders, certain medications (especially chemotherapy), viral infections, or autoimmune conditions where the body attacks its own neutrophils. Severe neutropenia is a serious medical concern.

Monitoring neutrophil counts is a standard part of a complete blood count (CBC) test. Changes in neutrophil concentration provide valuable diagnostic information for clinicians, helping to identify the presence and severity of infections, inflammatory processes, and other underlying health issues. The normal range for neutrophil counts can vary slightly between laboratories, but typically represents a significant portion of the total white blood cell count.
