Neurotoxins are substances that are poisonous or destructive to nerve tissue. They can be endogenous, produced within the body, or exogenous, originating from outside the body. Neurotoxins can affect the nervous system in various ways, including disrupting nerve impulse transmission, damaging nerve cells, or interfering with neuronal metabolism.

Exogenous neurotoxins can be found in natural sources like certain plants, animals, and microorganisms, or they can be man-made, such as pesticides and certain industrial chemicals. For example, tetrodotoxin, found in pufferfish, is a potent neurotoxin that blocks sodium channels, preventing nerve impulse propagation. Botulinum toxin, produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, is another well-known neurotoxin that inhibits the release of neurotransmitters, leading to muscle paralysis.

Exposure to neurotoxins can occur through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. The effects can range from mild symptoms like dizziness and nausea to severe neurological disorders, paralysis, and even death, depending on the type of neurotoxin, the dose, and the route of exposure.
