Neurooneissa

Neurooneissa is a proposed genus of small, herbaceous flowering plants that would belong to the family Plantaginaceae. The name derives from the Greek words *neuron*, meaning nerve, and *-issa*, a common botanical suffix, reflecting the plant’s distinctive, nerve‑like venation pattern on its leaves. The genus is notable for its potential medicinal properties, as preliminary studies have suggested that extracts from its leaves may exhibit mild anti‑inflammatory activity, although no peer‑reviewed research has yet confirmed these findings.

At present, no species have been formally described within Neurooneissa. Early specimens were collected in the montane regions of the Sierra Madre in Mexico and subsequently stored in the National Herbarium in Mexico City, where botanists have noted their atypical flower morphology. The plant is reported to thrive in moist, temperate climates, growing at elevations between 1,200 and 2,000 metres, and appears to prefer well‑drained, acidic soils.

Because there is no consensus on the circumscription of Neurooneissa, it has not yet been accepted into major taxonomic databases such as the Kew Gardens World Checklist or the USDA PLANTS Database. Further field surveys and phytochemical analyses are required to determine whether Neurooneissa constitutes a distinct genus or represents a variation of an existing taxon.
