Neuromolecular refers to the study of the nervous system at the molecular level, focusing on how genes, transcripts, proteins, and small molecules coordinate the development, function, and plasticity of neural circuits. It seeks to connect molecular interactions to cellular processes and network activity, explaining how neurons communicate, adapt to experience, and respond to injury or disease.

Key areas include neurotransmitter synthesis and packaging, receptor and ion channel biophysics, intracellular signaling cascades, and the regulation of gene expression in neurons. Important molecular players include SNARE proteins mediating vesicle fusion, neurotransmitter receptors such as NMDA and AMPA receptors, ion channels that control excitability, second messengers like cAMP and Ca2+, and kinases such as CaMKII and PKA. Developmental processes involve guidance cues and adhesion molecules that steer growth and synapse formation.
