Neuroinfektiot, also known as nervous system infections, are conditions caused by pathogens that invade and cause inflammation or damage to the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. These infections can arise from various microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The severity and specific symptoms depend on the causative agent, the location of the infection, and the immune status of the individual.

Common types of neuroinfections include meningitis, which is inflammation of the meninges (the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), and encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain itself. Brain abscesses, which are localized collections of pus within the brain, and myelitis, inflammation of the spinal cord, are also significant neuroinfections. Prion diseases, though not caused by typical pathogens but by misfolded proteins, are also considered within the broader category of neurodegenerative conditions that can have infectious-like transmission.

Symptoms of neuroinfections can vary widely and may include fever, headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizures, changes in consciousness, and focal neurological deficits such as weakness or sensory disturbances. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical assessment, neuroimaging techniques like MRI or CT scans, and laboratory tests such as lumbar puncture to analyze cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment strategies are tailored to the specific pathogen and may involve antibiotics for bacterial infections, antivirals for viral infections, or antifungal medications. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimize long-term neurological damage and improve outcomes.
