Neuauflage

Neuauflage is a term used in publishing to denote a newly issued edition of a work, typically released after the original edition and indicating that the content, presentation, or metadata has been revised or updated since the previous printing. It is distinct from the Erstausgabe (first edition) and from a Nachdruck (reprint) that reproduces the same content without substantial changes.

Reasons for a Neuauflage include corrections of errors, additions or updates to information, expanded or reorganized material, or changes in illustrations or layout. In some cases, a Neuauflage may also introduce a new author, editor, or contributor or reflect changes in copyright or licensing. The extent of changes can vary from minor edits to major rewrites.

From a bibliographic standpoint, a Neuauflage often carries a new edition number and a new ISBN, and catalog records may include a note describing the revisions and how the new edition relates to earlier ones. Librarians and scholars use such notes to track a work's publication history and to determine which edition to cite.

Neuauflagen are common in textbooks, reference works, manuals, standards, and legal texts, where updated information is essential for accuracy. The term is widely used in German-language publishing and is understood similarly in neighboring countries.
