Nettariffer

Nettariffer, often translated as net tariffs or net metering, is a billing mechanism that allows owners of renewable energy systems, such as solar panels, to receive credit for the excess electricity they generate and send back to the grid. When a renewable energy system produces more electricity than the owner is currently consuming, the surplus power flows back to the utility's grid.

Under a net metering policy, the electricity consumed from the grid is subtracted from the electricity exported to the grid over a billing period. If more electricity is exported than consumed, the customer typically receives a credit on their bill, often at the full retail rate of electricity. This credit can then be used to offset future electricity consumption. If more electricity is consumed than exported, the customer pays for the net amount of electricity drawn from the grid.

The specific rules and rates for net metering vary significantly by region and utility provider. Some policies have limits on the size of the renewable energy system eligible for net metering, while others may offer different credit rates for excess generation, such as a wholesale rate instead of the retail rate. Net metering is a key policy for encouraging the adoption of distributed renewable energy generation, as it provides a financial incentive for individuals and businesses to invest in these systems. It helps to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and can contribute to grid stability by utilizing local, clean energy sources.
