Nestekidettä, often translated as liquid crystal, is a state of matter that exhibits properties between those of conventional liquids and solid crystals. Liquid crystals are typically composed of rod-shaped or disk-shaped molecules that can flow like a liquid but also possess an ordered arrangement of molecules similar to a crystalline solid. This unique combination of properties arises from the anisotropic shape of their constituent molecules, which influences how they align and interact.

There are several types of liquid crystalline phases, including nematic, smectic, and cholesteric phases. In the nematic phase, molecules have no positional order but tend to align along a common direction. The smectic phase exhibits a higher degree of order, with molecules arranged in layers, and within these layers, they may or may not have orientational order. The cholesteric phase, also known as chiral nematic, is characterized by a helical arrangement of molecules.

The most well-known application of liquid crystals is in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In these devices, electric fields are used to alter the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules. This change in orientation affects the polarization of light passing through the liquid crystal, which is then used to control the brightness and color of pixels on a screen. The ability to control light transmission with a low voltage makes liquid crystals ideal for a wide range of display technologies, from calculators and watches to computer monitors and televisions. Beyond displays, liquid crystals find applications in thermometers, sensors, and optical devices due to their sensitivity to temperature and electric fields.
