Nervförbindelse

Nervförbindelse refers to the connection between nerve cells, also known as neurons. This connection allows for the transmission of electrical and chemical signals throughout the nervous system. The primary structure responsible for this communication is the synapse. At a synapse, the axon terminal of one neuron, the presynaptic neuron, comes into close proximity with the dendrite or cell body of another neuron, the postsynaptic neuron.

When an electrical impulse, or action potential, travels down the axon of the presynaptic neuron, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between the two neurons. These neurotransmitters then bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This binding can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, influencing whether it will fire its own action potential. This process of synaptic transmission is fundamental to all nervous system functions, including thought, movement, sensation, and emotion. The strength and efficiency of these nerve connections can be modified over time through a process called synaptic plasticity, which is crucial for learning and memory.
