Nervefunksjonen, or nerve function, refers to the biological processes through which neurons—specialized cells in the nervous system—transmit and process information. This function is essential for coordinating bodily activities, enabling responses to stimuli, and maintaining homeostasis. Neurons communicate via electrical impulses called action potentials, which travel along the axon, a long projection from the cell body. When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters—chemical messengers—that cross the synaptic cleft to influence neighboring neurons or effector cells, such as muscles or glands.

The nervous system is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which includes all other neural tissues. The CNS processes sensory input, integrates information, and initiates motor responses, while the PNS relays signals between the CNS and the rest of the body. Within the PNS, the somatic nervous system controls voluntary movements, whereas the autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion.

Conditions such as neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, or stroke impair neural signaling, leading to symptoms like pain, muscle weakness, or sensory loss. Proper nerve function depends on adequate nutrition, oxygen supply, and protection from physical or chemical damage.
