Neotheropods

Neotheropods are a clade of theropod dinosaurs that emerged during the Late Jurassic period. This group is characterized by a number of derived features, including a fused ischia, a reduced fibula, and a distinctive ankle structure. Neotheropods represent a significant evolutionary step within the theropod lineage, paving the way for the development of many later groups.

The most well-known and diverse subgroup within Neotheropoda is Coelurosauria, which encompasses a vast array of dinosaurs, including tyrannosaurids, ornithomimosaurs, therizinosaurs, dromaeosaurids (raptors), and troodontids. Birds, the only surviving lineage of dinosaurs, are also considered coelurosaurs, placing Neotheropoda as the direct ancestors of modern avian species. This close relationship is supported by numerous shared anatomical traits and fossil evidence.

Fossil discoveries have revealed that many neotheropods possessed feathers. This has revolutionized our understanding of dinosaur appearance and behavior, highlighting a connection between non-avian dinosaurs and birds that was not previously appreciated. The evolution of feathers is thought to have served various purposes, including insulation and display, and potentially played a role in the development of flight. The study of neotheropods continues to be a dynamic field, with new fossil finds constantly refining our understanding of their evolutionary history and diversity.
