Nematomorphs

Nematomorphs are a group of small, free-living, aquatic worms that belong to the phylum Nematomorpha. They are characterized by their slender, cylindrical bodies, which are typically less than 10 millimeters in length. Nematomorphs have a complete digestive system, with a mouth at one end and an anus at the other. They are hermaphroditic, meaning each individual has both male and female reproductive organs, although self-fertilization is not possible.

The phylum Nematomorpha is divided into two classes: Rhabditophora and Secernentea. Rhabditophora includes species that have a simple, straight body shape, while Secernentea have a more complex, segmented body. Both classes have a cuticle that provides protection and support.

Nematomorphs are found in various aquatic environments, including freshwater and marine habitats. They are often found in sediments or on the surfaces of aquatic plants. Their diet consists of small invertebrates and organic matter.

The taxonomy of nematomorphs is complex, with over 1,000 described species. They are often used in ecological studies due to their abundance and sensitivity to environmental changes. However, their small size and often cryptic nature make them difficult to study.
