Neljänvarsiohj
Neljänvarsiohj is a Finnish term that translates to "four-stemmed rudder" or "quadruple steering" in English. This refers to a specific type of rudder system found on some larger vessels, particularly older or specialized ships. Unlike conventional rudders which typically pivot on a single stock, a neljänvarsiohj system utilizes two separate rudder stocks, each controlling two interconnected rudder blades. This setup allows for greater maneuverability and a more powerful steering effect, especially at lower speeds. The two stocks are linked by a complex mechanical arrangement, often involving gears and connecting rods, enabling them to move in unison or independently depending on the design and operational requirements. This dual-rudder configuration can offer enhanced control in confined waterways or during complex docking procedures. The increased surface area and dual pivot points contribute to a more responsive and effective steering force compared to single rudder systems of equivalent size. While not a common feature on modern merchant vessels, the neljänvarsiohj system can still be found on certain tugboats, icebreakers, or historical vessels where its unique steering capabilities are advantageous.
