Neindikované

Neindikované is a term used in Czech to describe an intervention, test, or treatment that is not indicated for a specific patient or clinical scenario. In medical language it denotes that there is insufficient evidence of benefit, or that the risks or costs outweigh the potential advantages. The word stems from the noun indikace (indication) with the negating prefix ne-.

In clinical practice, a procedure or therapy is labeled neindikovaná when guidelines or expert consensus do not recommend it for a given condition, patient characteristics, or setting. This is distinct from a contraindication, which means an action is prohibited because it would cause harm, and from off-label use, which involves using a treatment outside its approved indication but may still be considered in certain circumstances.

Examples include neindikovaná radiodiagnostika in asymptomatic populations where screening is not supported by evidence of benefit, or neindikovaná antibiotic terapie for illnesses of viral origin. The classification can change as new data emerge, and decisions should be discussed with clinicians in the context of risks, benefits, and patient preferences.

Etymologically, neindikované reflects the broader framework of evidence-based medicine, where indications are continuously evaluated as new research becomes available. The term helps communicate why certain actions are not recommended despite their availability, guiding more appropriate and efficient clinical decision-making.
