Negle

Negle is the Danish term for nails, referring to the hard keratinous plates that cover the tips of fingers and toes. In everyday use, negle encompasses both fingernails and toenails, which share similar structure and function.

Anatomy and growth

A nail consists of the nail plate, nail bed, nail matrix, and surrounding folds. Growth originates in the nail matrix, located under the proximal nail fold; the visible plate rests on the nail bed. The matrix continually produces new cells that harden to form the nail. Fingernails typically grow about 2–3 millimeters per month, while toenails grow more slowly, around 1 millimeter per month. Nails move slowly and are constantly renewed over time.

Functions and care

Negle protect the distal phalanges, aid in fine motor tasks, and enhance tactile sensation. Proper care includes keeping nails clean, dry, and trimmed. Nails are usually trimmed straight across with rounded corners to reduce snagging. Regular moisturization of cuticles and surrounding skin helps maintain flexibility. Protective gloves are advised during exposure to harsh chemicals or repetitive wet work.

Common conditions

Nail health can reflect overall health. Fungal infections (onychomycosis) cause thickened, discolored nails. Nail psoriasis, koilonychia (spoon-shaped nails), and clubbing can accompany systemic conditions. Beau’s lines are horizontal grooves that may signal temporary illness or stress. Paronychia is an infection around the nail edge; hangnails are small tears in the cuticle area. Proper diagnosis and treatment are recommended for persistent changes.

Cultural and practical context

Negle are central to personal grooming in many cultures, with manicure and pedicure practices widespread. In medical contexts, nail appearance and growth are sometimes used as indicators of nutrition, circulation, or systemic disease. Note that in Danish, snegle means snails, while negle means nails.
