Negatív

Negatív is a term used primarily in Hungarian to denote the concept of negative. The word derives from Latin negativus and has cognates in several languages. In Hungarian, it functions both as an adjective and as a noun in phrases such as negatív szám (negative number), negatív érték (negative value), negatív töltés (negative charge), and negatív eredmény (negative result). Outside of Hungarian, the term appears in scientific and everyday language to signify opposition to positivity.

In mathematics and science, negatív numbers are numbers less than zero. In physics and chemistry, negative charge or ion is described as negatív töltés or negatív ion. In medicine and diagnostics, a negative result indicates the absence of a condition or pathogen, as in negatív teszt or vizsgálat.

In photography, a negatív is a film frame or digital capture that records light in inverted tonal values, used to produce positive prints. In linguistics and grammar, 'negatív' may appear in discussions of negation and negative polarity, though common usage often prefers terms like tagadó mondat or negáció.

Culturally, Negatív can also be used as a stylized proper noun, appearing as an artistic or brand name in Hungarian-speaking communities, among others.
