Navrongo

Navrongo is a town in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It is the administrative capital of the Kassena-Nankana East Municipal District. The town lies in the northern part of the country, near the border with Burkina Faso, and sits on the savannah plateau that characterizes the region. It is connected by road to Bolgatanga, the regional capital, and serves as a commercial center for surrounding communities.

Historically, Navrongo grew as an administrative and trading post during the colonial era. It hosts several public and health-focused institutions, including the Navrongo Hospital, one of the longstanding medical facilities in the area, and the Navrongo Health Research Centre, which conducts public health studies in northern Ghana.

The economy is primarily agricultural, with crops such as millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and shea nuts forming the basis of many livelihoods. Local markets operate on regular market days and facilitate cross-border trade with nearby communities in Burkina Faso.

Demographically, the town is largely inhabited by the Kassena and Nankana people. Local languages include Kassina and Nankana, while English is used for official purposes. The religious landscape includes Christianity and Islam, alongside traditional beliefs.
