Navarino

Navarino, also spelled Navarin, is a coastal region in the western Peloponnese, Greece. The name commonly refers to Navarino Bay and the nearby coast, including the village adjacent to the town of Pylos in the Messenia regional unit. The site is known for its natural harbor and its historical maritime associations.

Navarino Bay lies on the Ionian Sea coast of the southwestern Peloponnese. The harbour has long served as a shelter for ships and today supports fishing vessels and tourism. The area is linked with Bronze Age settlements, notably the Palace of Nestor at Pylos, a major archaeological site.

In the modern era, Navarino is best known for its role in the Greek War of Independence. The Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827 saw a combined fleet of Britain, France and Russia defeat the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet anchored in the bay, a decisive turning point that helped secure Greek independence and shaped European diplomacy.

Today the locality functions as a port and tourist destination, with access to the surrounding coastal landscapes and archaeological sites. The Navarino area remains a focus for maritime heritage and Bronze Age archaeology, attracting visitors and researchers alike.
