Naturaromen

Naturaromen, also referred to as natural flavors, are aroma compounds used to impart taste and aroma to foods and beverages that originate from natural sources such as plants or animals. They are distinguished from artificial flavors, which are chemically synthesized, and from nature-identical flavors, which are chemically equivalent to natural compounds but may not be derived from natural material.

These substances can include essential oils, distillates, extracts, or enzymatically altered ingredients. They are produced by methods such as extraction, distillation, cold pressing, solvent treatment, fermentation, or enzymatic conversion, and then standardized for use in specific food applications. The goal is to preserve the characteristic flavor profile of the source while creating stable, usable ingredients under controlled conditions.

Regulatory status varies by jurisdiction. In the European Union, flavorings and certain related ingredients are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008, which defines natural flavorings and sets labeling and purity requirements. In the United States, the FDA defines natural flavors as substances derived from plant or animal material that impart flavor or aroma and that meet specific composition criteria. Labeling typically lists "natural flavors" on ingredient panels, with further disclosures for allergens or processing aids as required by law.

Safety and consumer perception: Natural flavors undergo safety assessments as part of regulatory approval processes. They are not inherently safer or healthier than artificial flavors; concerns may relate to allergen exposure, sourcing practices, or the use of solvents in extraction.
