History and evolution: National libraries trace origins to royal, aristocratic, or university collections. The adoption of legal deposit and national bibliographies formalized their national role. In the digital era they have expanded into web archiving, digitization, and digital preservation.

Access and restrictions: While most materials are accessible to the public, some items may be restricted due to copyright, privacy, or security concerns. Digital collections are increasingly available online through national portals, with special provisions for scholars.

Examples: Norway’s Nasjonalbiblioteket is the national library in that country. The Nationalbiblioteket concept likewise exists in other Nordic countries under different official names, reflecting a commitment to preserving linguistic and cultural heritage for future generations.
