Narmer, often identified with the legendary King Menes, is a significant figure in early Egyptian history. He is primarily known from the Narmer Palette, a ceremonial cosmetic palette discovered in Hierakonpolis. This artifact depicts a king wearing both the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the Red Crown of Lower Egypt, signifying his unification of the two lands. The palette also shows Narmer smiting an enemy and overseeing processions, providing crucial visual evidence of early dynastic rule and warfare.

While historical consensus largely supports Narmer as the unifier of Egypt, the exact identity and reign of "Menes" remain subjects of scholarly debate. Some Egyptologists believe Narmer and Menes were indeed the same person, with Narmer being his personal name and Menes his regnal name. Others suggest Menes might have been a legendary founder of the First Dynasty, whose achievements were later attributed to Narmer.
