Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPMs) are a class of nanoinstruments that use a physical probe to scan the surface of a sample. The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) are two prominent examples. AFMs use a sharp tip to measure forces between the tip and the sample surface, providing high-resolution topographical images.
