Nachrückungen

Nachrückungen refers to the process by which individuals are selected to fill positions or receive benefits that were not initially filled. This concept is most commonly encountered in electoral systems and waiting lists. In elections, if a candidate who has been elected withdraws, becomes ineligible, or is otherwise unable to take their seat, the next person on the party's list or the candidate with the next highest number of votes (depending on the electoral system) is then "Nachgerückt" or "Nachrückung" into the vacant position. This ensures that the electoral outcome is fully realized and that representation is maintained.

The principle of Nachrückungen also applies to various waiting lists, such as those for housing, education, or employment. When a person ahead on the list declines an offer, withdraws their application, or their situation changes, the next person in line is offered the opportunity. This system aims to efficiently fill available slots and minimize wasted resources. The specifics of how Nachrückungen are implemented, including the order of succession and eligibility criteria, are typically defined by the rules governing the particular election, organization, or waiting list.
