Nacaris

Nacaris is a genus of prehistoric marine reptiles belonging to the family Ichthyosauria. These animals lived during the Early Cretaceous period, specifically in what is now Portugal and Morocco. Nacaris fossils have been discovered in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, in the form of well-preserved skeletons.

The name Nacaris is derived from the Portuguese "naca," meaning "fish," and the suffix "-aris," which is a common form for names of fossil species. This designation refers to the ichthyosaur-like body plan of these creatures. Nacaris is considered a member of the "short-snouted" ichthyosaurs, characterized by a relatively short skull and jaws. They are thought to have been carnivorous, preying upon fish and squid in the ancient oceans.

Further research has led to the classification of Nacaris as a distinct genus within the Ichthyosauria family. However, the relationships between Nacaris and other ichthyosaurs are still the subject of ongoing study.
