The term stems from naapur, meaning neighbor, and naapuruus denotes neighborliness or the condition of being neighbors. In urban studies and sociology, naapuruudet describe both the physical proximity of people and the social ties that connect them, including everyday encounters, mutual support, shared routines, and trust.
