NVMeTargets

NVMeTargets refers to the server-side software component responsible for presenting NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) storage devices over a network. It acts as a target in the NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics) protocol, enabling other devices, known as initiators, to access NVMe SSDs remotely. This allows for high-performance, low-latency storage access that can be shared across multiple clients.

The primary function of NVMeTargets is to manage and export NVMe namespaces. When an NVMe drive is connected to a server running NVMeTargets, the software can make specific portions (namespaces) of that drive available to other machines on the network. This is crucial for disaggregated storage architectures where compute and storage resources are separated.

NVMeTargets implementations are typically found in storage servers or dedicated storage appliances. They leverage NVMe-oF transport protocols such as RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet), iWARP (Internet Wide Area RDMA Protocol), or Fibre Channel to facilitate communication between the target and the initiators. This allows for efficient data transfer with minimal overhead.

By enabling remote access to fast NVMe storage, NVMeTargets plays a key role in modern data centers and cloud environments. It supports demanding workloads like high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and large-scale databases by providing shared, low-latency access to flash storage.
