NOxpäästöillä refers to emissions of nitrogen oxides, commonly abbreviated as NOx. Nitrogen oxides are a group of gases primarily composed of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These compounds are formed during high-temperature combustion processes when nitrogen and oxygen in the air react. Major sources of NOx emissions include exhaust from vehicles, power plants, and industrial boilers.

The formation of NOx is an unavoidable byproduct of combustion at elevated temperatures. In internal combustion engines, the high heat within the cylinders drives the reaction between atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen. Similarly, in industrial settings and power generation, the burning of fuels at high temperatures leads to NOx formation. Natural sources, such as lightning and volcanic activity, also contribute to NOx levels, though anthropogenic sources are typically far more significant in populated areas.

NOx emissions play a crucial role in environmental issues. Nitrogen dioxide, in particular, is a reddish-brown gas that contributes to air pollution. It can cause respiratory problems and exacerbate conditions like asthma. Furthermore, NOx is a precursor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog, which is harmful to human health and can damage vegetation. NOx also contributes to acid rain by reacting with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere to form nitric acid.

Efforts to reduce NOx emissions are a significant focus in environmental policy and technological development. Regulations in many countries limit the amount of NOx that can be released from vehicles and industrial facilities. Technologies such as catalytic converters in vehicles and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems in industrial applications are employed to convert NOx back into harmless nitrogen and oxygen before they are released into the atmosphere.
