NOxformation

NOxformation is a term used in combustion and atmospheric science to describe the processes, pathways, and conditions that lead to the formation of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) during combustion or in the atmosphere. The term is not universally standardized but is sometimes used to emphasize the combined effect of chemical kinetics and operating conditions on NOx generation.

Mechanisms of NOxformation include thermal NOx, fuel NOx, and prompt NOx. Thermal NOx arises at high flame temperatures, with formation depending on temperature, oxygen availability, and residence time. Fuel NOx results from nitrogen compounds bound in fuel molecules and becomes significant for fuels containing substantial fuel-bound nitrogen. Prompt NOx refers to early formation in the flame via hydrocarbon radical reactions with nitrogen species, even at somewhat lower temperatures.

Measurement and modeling of NOxformation focus on predicting NOx concentrations under varying operating conditions. NOx is typically reported as the sum of NO and NO2, in units such as parts per million or milligrams per cubic meter. Models use kinetic mechanisms to simulate NOx formation across ranges of pressure, temperature, equivalence ratio, and diluent. Mitigation strategies aim to reduce NOxformation, including lean-burn operation, exhaust gas recirculation, and post-combustion controls such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR).

Significance and regulation: NOx formation is a major environmental concern because NOx participates in tropospheric ozone formation and contributes to acid deposition. Regulatory standards for NOx emissions from vehicles, boilers, and power plants incentivize technologies and operating practices that minimize NOxformation, shaping design and optimization across industries.
