NOpäästöjä is a Finnish term that translates to "nitrogen oxide emissions" in English. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a group of gases that are primarily produced during the combustion of fossil fuels. These emissions are a significant air pollutant with various environmental and health impacts.

The main sources of NOx emissions include exhaust from vehicles, industrial processes such as power plants and factories, and agricultural activities. When nitrogen and oxygen in the air are exposed to high temperatures during combustion, they react to form nitrogen oxides.

NOx emissions contribute to several environmental problems. They are a key precursor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a major component of smog, which can harm human respiratory systems and damage vegetation. NOx also plays a role in acid rain, which can acidify lakes and streams, harm forests, and damage buildings and infrastructure. Furthermore, nitrogen deposition from NOx can lead to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems, causing imbalances in plant and animal life.

From a health perspective, exposure to NOx can irritate the airways, worsen respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis, and increase susceptibility to infections. Long-term exposure is linked to more severe respiratory issues.

Regulations and technological advancements aim to reduce NOx emissions. These include catalytic converters in vehicles, low-NOx burners in industrial facilities, and strategies to improve fuel efficiency and promote cleaner energy sources. Monitoring and controlling NOx levels are crucial for improving air quality and protecting public health and the environment.
