Närvilihassüsteemi refers to the neuromuscular system, a complex biological system that enables voluntary and involuntary movement in vertebrates. It is the functional unit responsible for translating nerve impulses into muscle contractions. This system comprises motor neurons, which are nerve cells originating in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and the muscle fibers they innervate.

The process begins when the brain or spinal cord generates an electrical signal, an action potential, which travels down the axon of a motor neuron. Upon reaching the neuromuscular junction, a specialized synapse, the motor neuron releases a neurotransmitter, typically acetylcholine, into the synaptic cleft. Acetylcholine binds to receptors on the muscle fiber membrane, triggering a series of events that lead to muscle contraction.

This contraction involves the sliding of actin and myosin filaments within the muscle cell, a process powered by adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The coordinated action of many motor units, each consisting of a single motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it controls, allows for precise and varied movements, from delicate finger manipulations to powerful limb extensions. The neuromuscular system is crucial for all forms of locomotion, posture maintenance, and even internal organ function, such as breathing and digestion. Disruptions to this system, caused by disease or injury, can result in muscle weakness, paralysis, or uncontrolled muscle spasms.
