The compound is primarily obtained from salt mines, where it is extracted from evaporated seawater. It is also produced synthetically through the Solvay process, which involves reacting sodium carbonate with hydrochloric acid. In the food industry, sodium chloride is used as a flavoring agent and preservative. It enhances the taste of many foods and prevents bacterial growth by drawing moisture out of bacteria cells. However, excessive consumption of sodium chloride has been linked to health issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Sodium chloride is also used in the production of glass and textiles. In the glass industry, it acts as a flux, lowering the melting point of silica. In textiles, it is used in the tanning process to prepare animal hides for leather production.

Despite its widespread use, sodium chloride can be harmful if ingested in large amounts. It can cause dehydration, nausea, and in severe cases, hypernatremia, a condition characterized by an excess of sodium in the blood. Therefore, it is important to consume sodium chloride in moderation and to be aware of the recommended daily intake of sodium.
