Total määräävyyttä indicates that the action of the verb is directed towards the entire object, or that the action is completed with regard to the object. This is typically marked by the accusative case for definite objects or the genitive case in certain constructions. For example, in the sentence "Luulen kirjaa" (I am reading the book), the action of reading is directed towards the entire book, implying the reading is complete or encompasses the whole object.

Partial määräävyyttä, on the other hand, signifies that the action affects only a part of the object, or that the action is ongoing or incomplete with respect to the object. This is usually expressed using the partitive case. For instance, in the sentence "Luulen kirjaa" (I am reading *some of* the book), the partitive case indicates that the reading is not necessarily complete or is focused on a portion of the book.

The distinction between total and partial määräävyyttä is crucial for understanding the nuances of Finnish verb-object relationships and can influence the interpretation of sentence meaning.
