Määräaikaisuus

Määräaikaisuus refers to the concept of temporariness or fixed-term nature, commonly encountered in Finnish legal and employment contexts. It signifies that an agreement, contract, or status is valid for a specific, predetermined period, after which it automatically ceases to exist or requires renewal.

In employment law, määräaikaisuus is often applied to fixed-term employment contracts. These contracts have a defined start and end date, and the employment relationship concludes upon reaching that date unless a new agreement is made. Reasons for fixed-term employment can include covering for an absent employee, seasonal work, or specific project-based tasks. While offering flexibility, Finnish law also sets limits on the use of fixed-term contracts to prevent their misuse as a means of circumventing the more robust protections afforded to permanent employees.

Beyond employment, the principle of määräaikaisuus can be found in various other legal arrangements. For instance, permits or licenses may be issued for a fixed period, requiring reapplication upon expiry. Similarly, certain financial instruments or agreements might have a stipulated duration.
