Määritysarvat, or "definite articles" in English, are grammatical words used in Finnish to specify or indicate the definiteness of a noun phrase. They are a key component of Finnish grammar and help distinguish between definite and indefinite reference to nouns. In Finnish, there are four definite articles: *tämä*, *tuo*, *se*, and *nämä*, *tuo*, *ne*, which are used to refer to specific, previously mentioned, or contextually known entities.

The article *tämä* (singular) and *nämä* (plural) are used for things that are near the speaker or currently relevant. For example, *tämä kirja* means "this book" when referring to a book that is close to the speaker. *Tuo* (singular) and *tuo* (plural) refer to things that are near the listener but not the speaker, such as *tuo auto* ("that car" from the listener’s perspective). The article *se* (singular) and *ne* (plural) are used for things that are distant from both the speaker and listener or when the reference is unclear, like *se katu* ("that street" in a distant or unspecified location).

Unlike many other languages, Finnish does not have indefinite articles like "a" or "an." Instead, nouns can be used without articles to indicate indefiniteness or general reference. For example, *kirja* alone means "a book" or "book" in a general sense. Definite articles are also used in possessive constructions, such as *minun kirja* ("my book"), where *minun* functions similarly to a definite article in specifying possession.
