Määraadjediivsed

Määraadjediivsed is a small coastal settlement situated within Harju County on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Finland. The locality occupies an area of approximately 0.5 square kilometres and is characterized by low‑lying dunes, a narrow stretch of sandy beach, and a network of footpaths that run through mixed pine forests. The name Määraadjediivsed derives from the Estonian words *määrata* (to designate) and *jõud* (force), reflecting the village’s historical role as a site where maritime navigation aids were historically marked and maintained.

The settlement’s origins date back to the late 17th century, when fishermen from Tallinn settled in the area to exploit the rich marine resources. During the 19th century, a small lighthouse was constructed on the easternmost point of the coastline, serving as a crucial navigational beacon for ships entering the nearby port of Tallinn. The lighthouse and the surrounding keeper's quarters were built in the traditional Estonian wooden style, featuring a distinctive red and white color scheme.

Today, Määraadjediivsed maintains a population of fewer than 200 residents, largely engaged in seasonal tourism and small‑scale aquaculture. The lighthouse has been closed to the public but is preserved as a cultural monument. Annual festivals, such as the Määraadjediivsed Summer Fair, showcase local seafood cuisine, traditional folk music, and windsurfing competitions. The area is also noted for its birdlife, particularly the presence of migratory shorebirds in the spring and autumn months.
