Märkäsyntetiikka, often translated as wet synthesis, refers to chemical reactions and processes that take place in a liquid medium. This is in contrast to dry synthesis, which occurs in the solid state or in a gaseous phase. Wet synthesis is a broad term encompassing a wide variety of techniques used in chemistry to create new substances.

The liquid medium, or solvent, plays a crucial role in wet synthesis. It dissolves the reactants, facilitating their interaction and reaction. The choice of solvent is critical and depends on the solubility of the reactants, the desired reaction conditions, and the properties of the final product. Common solvents include water, alcohols, ethers, and hydrocarbons. Temperature, pressure, and concentration of reactants are also important parameters controlled during wet synthesis.

Many common chemical processes fall under the umbrella of wet synthesis. This includes precipitation reactions, where insoluble solids form from dissolved precursors, and solution-phase reactions, where molecules interact in solution to form new bonds. Crystallization, a technique used to purify solids, also typically involves dissolving a compound in a solvent and then allowing it to precipitate out as pure crystals. In industrial settings, wet synthesis is widely employed for the production of pharmaceuticals, polymers, and fine chemicals due to its versatility and ability to control reaction outcomes.
