Märgjahutuskolonns

Märgjahutuskolonn, also known as a wet cooling tower, is a device used to reduce the temperature of water through direct contact with air. This process, called evaporative cooling, relies on the principle that when water evaporates, it absorbs heat from its surroundings, thus lowering the water temperature.

The basic design of a märgjahutuskolonn involves a tower structure where warm water is pumped to the top and then distributed over a packing material or fill. This fill increases the surface area of the water, allowing for more efficient contact with the air that is drawn or forced through the tower. As air passes over the wetted surfaces of the fill, a portion of the water evaporates. The evaporation process removes heat from the remaining water, cooling it down. The cooled water is collected at the bottom of the tower in a basin and is then recirculated to the process requiring cooling.

The moist air, now carrying the evaporated water and the absorbed heat, is typically exhausted from the top of the tower. Make-up water is continuously added to the system to replace the water lost through evaporation, drift (small water droplets carried out with the air), and blowdown (a controlled discharge of water to remove dissolved solids). Märgjahutuskolonnid are commonly found in industrial settings, power plants, and large commercial buildings for air conditioning systems. They are an effective and energy-efficient method for dissipating waste heat.
